Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said that the registration of the Awami League has been suspended.

He said the decision was made at a meeting held in the office of Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin at the Election Building in the capital’s Agargaon on Monday evening.

Election Commissioners Anwarul Islam, Abdur Rahmanel Masud, and Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, among others, were present at the meeting.

Earlier on Monday, the government issued a gazette, banning all activities of Awami League, the party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted following a student-led uprising last year.

From now on, all sorts of activities of Awami League have been declared prohibited under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, or ICT Act, it said.

That means none can do politics using the name of Bangladesh Awami League in the country, read the gazette notification issued in the afternoon.
