Awami League activities banned until trial ends

The government has decided to impose a ban on all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League until the completion of its trial at the International Crimes Tribunal. The announcement came following a special session of the Advisory Council held on Saturday.

Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul briefed reporters after the meeting, stating that a formal notification would be issued on the next working day. The council approved an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, which now authorizes the tribunal to prosecute and punish political parties, their affiliated organisations, or support groups.

“In light of the amendment, the Advisory Council has resolved to suspend all activities of the Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act. This includes any form of operation in physical spaces as well as online platforms,” Nazrul said.

He added that the council also agreed to finalise and release the long-awaited July announcement within the next 30 working days.
