HSC girl chose her mother—Now she awaits 2nd chance

Anisa Ahmed, a Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinee in Dhaka, may be given the opportunity to retake her missed exam after she was unable to attend due to a family medical emergency.

The student, enrolled at Dhaka Education Board Laboratory School and College, was forced to take her mother—who suffered a sudden stroke— to the hospital on the morning of the first examination. Arriving late at Mirpur Government Bangla College, she was denied entry into the exam center and missed the paper.

A video showing Anisa in tears outside the exam hall went viral, sparking a wave of public sympathy and strong criticism of the system’s lack of flexibility. Her father passed away two years ago, and Anisa is the sole caregiver for her mother, adding to the emotional weight of the situation.

Senior Supreme Court Advocate Md Jahangir Alam Ruhul Kuddus confirmed via Facebook that efforts are being made to allow Anisa to retake the exam. He spoke with Anisa, her mother, and college principal Professor Asaduzzaman, stating that both the institution and teachers are fully supportive. Legal guidance was also offered to the family, with the hope that authorities will resolve the issue without requiring court intervention.

The advocate referred to a precedent involving students of Motijheel Model School and College in 2000, who were allowed to sit for missed exams under exceptional circumstances.

Although no formal announcement has been made by the Dhaka Education Board, sources suggest that the matter is under active consideration. Advocate Ruhul Kuddus expressed confidence that the board and the education adviser would act on humanitarian grounds, ensuring Anisa can continue her education without disruption.
