Bangladesh’s Abdur Rahman Alif made history by winning gold in the men’s recurve individual event at the second leg of the Asia Cup Archery in Singapore on Friday.
The 19-year-old defeated Japan’s Gakuto Miyata 6-4 in a thrilling final at the Bukit Gombak Stadium.
Ranked 179th in the world in men's recurve, Alif becomes only the second Bangladeshi archer to win gold at the continental level. The first was Roman Sana, who triumphed in the third leg of the Asia Cup in 2019.
Alif began the gold medal match with confidence, narrowly winning the first two sets. He scored 28 to Miyata’s 27 in the opening set, followed by another close win in the second. However, the Japanese archer bounced back, taking the third and fourth sets to level the contest.
In the decisive fifth set, Alif held his nerve and shot a superb 29 to Miyata’s 26, sealing a memorable victory.
