The bail application of Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, the former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and former senior vice-president of the district Awami League, has been rejected by the court.
On Monday, May 12, during the afternoon, the Judicial Magistrate Second Court of Narayanganj, presided over by Judge Shamsur Rahman, rejected the bail plea. The court also stated that if the defense lawyers apply for a division (higher court), they will consider it and make a decision later.
Narayanganj’s Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Zakir stated that Ivy was arrested in connection with a specific case, and it was in that case that the defense lawyers applied for bail. The court denied the bail request. However, they also applied for a division, which will be considered later.
Ivy’s lawyer, Advocate Mahbubur Rahman Masum, said that the former mayor held the rank of a state minister. They requested the court to grant her division (special treatment in custody). The court agreed to this principle and instructed the jail authorities accordingly.
Another of Ivy’s lawyers, Siddiqur Rahman, stated that Ivy never participated in any anti-discrimination movement. He claimed that all the cases against her are false, and she had no involvement in these incidents. She has been placed in custody for one case, while for the other cases, no custody has been issued, which is causing a delay in the bail process.
It is noteworthy that on May 9, early in the morning, Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy was arrested by the police from her residence, Chunka Kuthir, in the Dewbhog area of the city. She was then arrested in connection with the murder case of garment worker Minarul Islam (30) and was sent to the Senior Judicial Magistrate Moinuddin Kadir’s court, where she was ordered to be sent to jail. Later, Ivy was transferred to the Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail in Gazipur.
