‘BNP has repeatedly sent letters to the chief advisor to ban Awami League’

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the party has repeatedly urged the interim government to initiate legal proceedings to ban the Awami League, citing serious allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity.

In a press release issued today, Fakhrul said, “During our meeting with the chief advisor on February 10, we submitted a letter demanding that the Awami League be brought before the judiciary for committing genocide and crimes against humanity.”

He further mentioned that during a subsequent meeting with the chief advisor on April 16, the BNP reiterated its demand, stating in another letter that, “The fallen fascist party and those associated with its government should be swiftly brought to justice, and the country’s political landscape must be cleansed of such filth.”

The BNP Secretary General emphasized that the party has consistently made these demands during formal meetings, public rallies, and discussions.

“We clearly stated that it is both possible and necessary to legally ban the fascist party, Awami League,” Fakhrul added.

Referring to recent legal amendments that pave the way for prosecuting political parties accused of human rights violations, Fakhrul commented, “We consider the decision to amend the law and take action against a party responsible for disappearances, killings, oppression, and misrule to be justified.”

However, he criticized the timing of the move, suggesting that earlier action could have spared the government from acting under pressure. “Had this decision been taken earlier, in response to our repeated calls, the government would not have found itself in an awkward and undesirable position,” he said.

He concluded by urging the interim administration to proceed with awareness and resolve: “We hope the interim government will keep this matter in serious consideration when shaping its future course of action.”
