Former N’ganj Mayor Ivy sent to jail

Former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor and district Awami League former senior vice-president Dr Selina Hayat Ivy was sent to jail on Friday morning.

The court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Moinuddin Kadir sent Ivy to jail. Earlier in the morning, she was produced before the court showing arrest in a murder case filed with Siddhirganj Police Station.

Court Police Inspector Md Kaiyum Khan confirmed the development.

Kaiyum Khan said that Ivy has been shown arrested in connection with the killing of Monirul Islam, who was shot dead during the anti-discrimination student movement in Siddhirganj. The court has fixed the next hearing date for May 26.

Monirul's brother, Nazmul Haque, filed the case on September 3 last year. Ivy is listed as the 12th accused in the FIR. A total of 130 individuals were named in the case, with an additional 300 unidentified persons listed as defendants.

Selina Hayat Ivy was arrested from her house in the city in the early hours of Friday after an hours-long drama as tensions heightened among her followers who took position in front of her residence to prevent the arrest.

Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasir Uddin said they detained Ivy from ‘Chunka Kutir’ in Deobhog around 6:00 am, citing multiple charges, including murder.

Around 11:00 pm on Thursday, a police team from Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station arrived at Ivy's home, and the news quickly spread, triggering protests.

Her supporters blocked adjacent roads to prevent police access to the area.
