University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor SMA Faiz said the government has accepted the demands of Jagannath University (JnU) students, as he ended their hunger strike by offering them water.
On Friday evening, he arrived at the protest site and ended the hunger strike of the demonstrating students.
The UGC chairman said: “We’ve been working on this all day. The UGC is like a family, and together we can find a solution. We promise to sit together and resolve everything. We are working to implement all of your demands.”
Joining him at the scene, JnU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Rezaul Karim said: “A decision has been made to implement the students’ demands. The first demand will be met by increasing the university’s operational budget. Through this budget increase, we have decided to fulfill the first demand.
"At the same time, to address the housing crisis, a temporary hall will be constructed, and work will begin soon. The work for the second campus will be initiated on a priority basis and has already begun.”
Earlier, to press home their demands, students began a hunger strike at Kakrail intersection at 3:45pm on Friday. Students from different departments participated in groups.
With the participation of around 5,000 current and former students, the announcement of the mass hunger strike was made at a gathering at 3pm by Mahtab Limon, general secretary of Jagannath University Journalists' Association, on behalf of the platform "JnU Unity."
