SpaceX set for next Starship launch after fiery failures

SpaceX is preparing for a critical test flight of its Starship megarocket on Tuesday evening, marking a major step forward in Elon Musk’s vision to establish human life on Mars and support NASA’s lunar missions.

The launch window opens at 6:30 p.m. local time (2330 GMT) from the company’s Starbase site in southern Texas, reports AFP.

Starship, at 403 feet tall, is the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. Designed for full reusability, it is the centerpiece of SpaceX’s strategy to reduce space travel costs and enable interplanetary exploration. The upcoming test is Starship’s ninth flight, and for the first time, it will reuse a Super Heavy booster. However, SpaceX will not attempt a tower catch; the booster will instead splash down in the Gulf of Mexico. The upper stage aims for a partial orbit and will land in the Indian Ocean.

The two previous test flights ended in fiery explosions, prompting safety reviews and regulatory scrutiny. The FAA has since expanded the restricted airspace to 1,600 nautical miles and coordinated with international authorities across the Caribbean and Atlantic regions to minimize risk.

A key innovation in this test is the deployment of mock Starlink satellites, which will burn up in the atmosphere. This is the first time SpaceX will attempt a payload deployment with Starship. It represents a step toward operational capability, despite no satellites surviving the reentry.

NASA is relying on a variant of Starship for Artemis 3, which will return astronauts to the Moon. The agency and global observers are watching this test closely, as it reflects the rocket’s maturity and safety profile.

Elon Musk’s company has rapidly redirected resources toward Starship development. According to reports, SpaceX aims to launch a Mars mission as early as next year. The successful reuse of boosters and cost reduction in hardware—70% lower bill of materials for its latest AD kit—demonstrate SpaceX’s push toward efficiency.

In prior tests, the company successfully used robotic arms on its launch tower to catch the Super Heavy booster—an engineering feat it says is essential for future reusability. However, due to the reused nature of the booster in this test, a catch will not be attempted.

Despite concerns from conservation groups, the FAA recently approved an increase in Starbase’s annual launch frequency from five to 25. The regulator concluded that the expanded rhythm would not adversely impact the local environment, including the habitat of sea turtles and migratory birds.

SpaceX’s performance in this test could define the trajectory of future commercial and exploratory missions. A successful launch and recovery would restore confidence in Starship and solidify its role in the next era of space exploration.
