Legal action underway in Mitford murder: Home affairs adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has confirmed that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing legal action against those involved in the brutal murder of businessman Mohammad Sohag near the gate of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.

During his visit to the Dhaka District Police Lines and Reserve Force Office on Saturday, the adviser assured the public that police are arresting the accused and progressing with the investigation.

Chowdhury emphasized that no one involved in the killing would be spared, stating that legal steps are already in motion. He warned against vigilante justice or public retaliation, noting that such actions could obstruct the legal process. “Justice takes time,” he said, urging citizens to place trust in the judicial system and not take matters into their own hands.

The statement follows public outrage over a viral video showing Sohag being attacked with sharp weapons and a stone in broad daylight on Wednesday at Rajani Ghosh Lane near Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital. The graphic footage sparked national alarm and led to mounting pressure on law enforcement to act swiftly.

Police confirmed the arrest of five individuals in connection with the murder, including 32-year-old Tipton Gazi, the ninth named accused in the case. The arrests were confirmed by Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, who said investigations are ongoing to capture the remaining suspects.

The brutal nature of the crime and its location in a heavily trafficked area has reignited concerns about public safety in Dhaka. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice through lawful procedures, with Home Affairs officials stressing that accountability will be upheld and the culture of impunity must end.
