Scrap dealer killed in dispute over business transaction: DMP

DMP's Lalbagh Division deputy police commissioner (DC) Md. Jashim Uddin said, "We are seeing many stories in the media behind the murder of Lal Chan alias Sohag. As far as we know, scrap business is very common in that area.

There was a scrap shop there; there was a dispute over who would do business in that shop. We have come to know that the victim of the murder and those suspected of being involved in the murder are related to each other.”

Deputy police commissioner (DC) Md. Jashim Uddin gave this information at a briefing organized by the DMP Media Center on Saturday.

Jashim Uddin said, “The murder took place between 5:40 pm and 6 pm on July 9 at and adjacent to Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College under Kotwali Police Station. Many people gathered and beat a person to death in various ways. As soon as the incident happened, the police reached the spot and arrested two people within a short time. We immediately examined the body and sent it to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.”

He further said, “We can see many different stories in the media behind this incident. As far as we know, scrap metal business is very common in that area. There was a scrap metal shop there; there was a conflict over who would do business in that shop. We have come to know that the victim of the murder and those suspected of being involved in the murder are related to each other. They did the business together for some time. But a conflict arose between them over business transactions. They got into a dispute with Sohag to do their own business and this murder took place.”

“After the murder took place on July 9, the victim Sohag's sister filed a case with the Kotwali police station on July 10— Case number 7. After this incident, we identified those involved in the murder by looking at the video footage and so far five people have been arrested. Of these, two were arrested by RAB and three by Kotwali police,” he added.

When asked about the political identity of those involved in the murder, he said, "If there is a crime, the police investigate the case by considering who the culprit is. Their political identity is not the main issue for us. Is it their involvement in the crime that we want to give importance to? Why they committed the crime is important to us. So far, we have seen through various media that their identities are being shown as being associated with different political parties. But we have not been able to confirm their identities from reliable sources so far. We have also asked those who have been arrested whether they have any political identity. They did not give us any clear information in this regard. We will interrogate them more closely.”

When asked if there was any issue of extortion, he said, "We do not know about the issue of extortion. We have not received any such information. As far as we know, it is a matter of reciprocal conflict."

An atrocity has been taking place for a long time in an important hospital and business area of Dhaka. When asked whether there was any advance policing and police patrolling in this case, he said, "The police arrived there within ten minutes of the incident and immediately arrested the two people." Deputy Police Commissioner of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Department, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, was present at the time.
