Anisul Huq placed on remand in arms case

A Dhaka court on Monday granted a two-day remand for former law minister Anisul Huq in a case filed under the Arms Act at Banani Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajur Rahman passed the order after police sought a five-day remand, confirmed by Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain of Banani Police Station.

According to the case details, Anisul Huq legally owned a licensed pistol under the jurisdiction of Banani Police Station.

The Ministry of Home Affairs suspended all firearms licenses issued for personal security between January 6, 2009, and August 5, 2024, and ordered the submission of such firearms by September 3, 2024.

However, Anisul Huq failed to deposit his licensed firearm at the police station or inform the authorities between September 4, 2024, and May 5. Police found no one at his registered address, and no information was obtained regarding the weapon’s status.

Earlier on August 13, based on a tip-off, police arrested the former law minister from the Sadarghat area of Dhaka while he was allegedly trying to flee by waterway.

He has since been in remand in connection with multiple murder and attempt to murder cases.
