The nasal bone of Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), has been fractured.
A high-level medical board has been formed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for his treatment, the hospital’s Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman confirmed on Saturday morning.
The DMCH director said Nur had sustained a fractured nasal bone, an injury above his eye, and minor bleeding in the head. He was first brought to the hospital on Friday night in an injured state. Doctors at the casualty department initially examined him before transferring him to the One-Stop Emergency Centre (OSEC).
Later that night, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Brigadier General Asaduzzaman added that a medical board comprising physicians from five departments was formed the same night and Nur is receiving treatment under their supervision. “His current condition is stable,” he said.
He further cautioned that doctors would not declare Nur out of danger until 48 hours had passed. “The bleeding in his brain is expected to heal with medication,” he added with optimism.
The six-member medical board includes the DMCH director, heads of the anaesthesia, casualty, ear-nose-throat (ENT), neurosurgery, and ophthalmology departments.
The incident took place on Friday evening in the capital’s Kakrail, when clashes broke out between activists of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) and the Gono Odhikar Parishad. The violence erupted in front of the JaPa central office after a procession of the Gono Odhikar Parishad passed by.
Several people, including Nur, were injured when law enforcement intervened with baton charges.
