BUET students block Shahbagh protesting ’unjust’ facilities for diploma engineers

BUET students blocked the Shahbagh intersection around 11am on Wednesday, demanding a reduction of "some unjustified" professional facilities enjoyed by diploma degree holders.

Engineering students, holding bachelor's and master's degrees, from across the country are set to join their BUET counterparts at the crucial intersection to press home their three-point demand.

Afterwards, a delegation would march towards State Guesthouse Jamuna, the official residence of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, to discuss their demands, a protest organiser said Tuesday.

On Tuesday, students from BUET and private universities blocked Shahbagh intersection for five hours until 8pm to press home the same demands. Students from RUET, CHUET and KUET are expected to join the movement in the capital on Wednesday.

The demands are: preventing diploma engineers from using “engineer title” before their names, preventing them from getting promotion to the ninth grade of government services, and allowing bachelor's degree holders to apply for tenth grade posts.
