RU students block highway protesting attack on VP Nur

Rajshahi University (RU) students on Saturday blocked the Dhaka–Rajshahi highway, protesting the attack on Ganadhikar Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur and his associates in Dhaka.

The demonstration began around 11:30 am in front of the university’s main gate, where the students staged a one-hour sit-in and later held a brief rally before withdrawing the blockade.

During the programme, students chanted slogans demanding justice for the attack and criticizing what they termed “state-backed fascism.” Slogans included “Student, citizen, people—unite as one,” and “Why is VP Nur injured, the administration must answer.”

Addressing the rally, RU unit president of Chhatra Adhikar Parishad, Mehedi Hasan Maruf, said: “We have repeatedly demanded a ban on the Jatiya Party and other collaborators of fascism. Yet, attempts are being made to rehabilitate authoritarian politics under their shelter. The attack on Nur was carried out under this very patronage. The interim government must ensure justice.”

Former coordinator Salauddin Ammar described Nur as a “symbol of resistance since 2017” and warned that the attack sent a “serious signal” for grassroots leaders across the country. “If such an assault can happen on a national political leader, then student and local leaders are at even greater risk,” he said.

Former coordinator Fahim Reza and Parishad general secretary Al Shahriya Shuvo also spoke at the event. Around 100 students from different departments took part in the protest.
