In a bizarre and alarming incident, a woman falsely reported a bomb threat on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dhaka to Kathmandu to prevent her son from traveling with his extramarital partner, according to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The claim led to an emergency landing and prompted a full security sweep of the aircraft, though no explosives were found.
RAB Director General (DG) and Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman revealed the details at a press conference held at Karwan Bazar on Saturday. He confirmed that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, which stemmed from a family dispute.
"Initial investigations revealed that a man named Emon was planning to fly to Kathmandu with a woman believed to be his extramarital partner," said the RAB DG. "After learning of the plan, Emon's wife and mother became distressed. Acting on information shared by one of Emon’s friends, the mother placed a call to air traffic control from an unregistered number and claimed there was a bomb on the flight."
The false report triggered an emergency response from aviation and law enforcement authorities. The Biman aircraft was forced to land and was thoroughly searched, but no explosives were discovered on board.
The RAB chief confirmed that the motive behind the hoax was deeply personal. "It was a desperate attempt by the mother to stop her son from traveling with another woman," he said. "This type of misuse of emergency communication channels is not only irresponsible but poses a grave threat to public safety."
Legal action is being taken against those involved under Bangladesh’s aviation and criminal laws. The three individuals in custody are being interrogated, and further investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have reiterated that false alarms and bomb threats are treated with utmost seriousness, regardless of motive, as they disrupt critical infrastructure, endanger lives, and can cause widespread panic.
