’I take full responsibility for Sylhet heartbreak’

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto took full responsibility for his team’s dramatic three-wicket defeat against Zimbabwe in the Sylhet Test, admitting that his early dismissal on the fourth morning shifted the momentum irreversibly.

“If you ask me about this match as a captain, the whole thing got lost because of me. That’s the truth,” Shanto said after the match.

“That wicket of mine in the early morning ruined the whole match. If we had added 50-60 more runs at that time, we would have been in a better position,” he added.

“I am taking all the responsibilities since my dismissal came at a very bad time,” said a visibly emotional Shanto.

Bangladesh, leading by just 109 overnight with four wickets in hand, collapsed early on Day 4 and were bowled out for 255, setting Zimbabwe a target of 174.

Despite a mini-collapse where the visitors lost 6 wickets for 57 runs — triggered by Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 5-60 — Zimbabwe’s Wesley Madhevere held his nerve to steer his side to a historic chase, their highest in Test cricket.
