Bangladesh took a major step toward qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a stunning 2-1 victory over hosts Myanmar in their Group C qualifier on Wednesday at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, reports the Daily Sun.
Forward Rituporna Chakma was the star of the match, scoring both goals for Bangladesh. Her first came in the 20th minute, followed by a second in the 71st, sealing a memorable win for the visitors.
This result is especially significant as Myanmar is ranked 73 places above Bangladesh in the FIFA rankings. With the win, Bangladesh now lead the group and are in pole position to qualify for the Asian Cup as group champions — which would guarantee a direct spot in the tournament.
The upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup is scheduled to be held in Australia next year. If Bangladesh secures qualification, it would mark a historic moment, as the women’s team would join the men’s side, who made their first and only Asian Cup appearance back in 1980.
