Referendum on July Charter could coincide with election day: Salahuddin

BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has indicated that a referendum on the implementation of the July Charter may coincide with the parliamentary elections.

Speaking after a meeting of the National Consensus Commission on Sunday, Salahuddin clarified that there are no legal or logistical barriers to holding the referendum on the same day as the election.

“The content of the July Charter will be made public, and the verdict of the referendum will be final. The next parliament will be bound to accept its outcome,” Salahuddin remarked. According to him, the National Consensus Commission is in the final stages of implementing the charter, with significant decisions already made.

Salahuddin also revealed that the National Charter 2025 Ordinance is expected to be promulgated by July 2026. However, he stressed that the issue of Note of Dissent will be included in the election manifesto of the respective political parties, signaling its importance in the upcoming elections.

Additionally, the BNP leader confirmed that the party has withdrawn its earlier demand to seek the judiciary's advice under Article 106 of the constitution. Instead, the party now plans to proceed with the issuance of the National Charter 2025 Ordinance followed by a public referendum.
