BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the BNP believes the party chief should have the opportunity to become the prime minister.
He made the remark while speaking to journalists on Sunday after a meeting with the National Consensus Commission.
“We often refer to the United Kingdom as the cradle of democracy. There, the party chief and the prime minister are usually the same person. Although there are exceptions in some countries, it is ultimately the ruling party that decides who will be prime minister. For this reason, BNP believes the party chief should be allowed the opportunity to become prime minister. We hope to reach a consensus on the issue in the upcoming discussions,” Salahuddin said.
He added, “Today, we discussed whether certain amendments could be made to the caretaker government provision outlined in the 13th Amendment. We have received a draft proposal from the Consensus Commission regarding the caretaker government. BNP will review it and provide its opinion.”
The senior party leader also said that discussions on the new draft proposal from the Consensus Commission will continue on Tuesday.
“Today’s discussion primarily focused on the formation process and power structure of the caretaker government,” he added.
Meanwhile, following the meeting, National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz expressed hope that the July Declaration can be announced within this month.
