Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, blocked the capital’s Shahbagh intersection and Hotel InterContinental intersection on Thursday morning for the third time this week, demanding justice for the murder of their Dhaka University (DU) unit member Shahriar Alam Shamyo.
The blockade has resulted in severe traffic congestion in and around Shahbagh.
The demonstrators began gathering at the key intersections around 9:30 am. By 10:00 am, around a hundred activists, led by Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam, had occupied the roads, halting vehicular movement in the surrounding areas.
Chhatra Dal announced that the protest would continue until 5:00 pm.
Rakibul Islam said, “We have not yet seen any assurance of justice or visible progress in the investigation over the trial of Shamyo’s murder. Rather, the administrative officials are hiding.”
He also criticized the Dhaka University administration for not disclosing the identities of the three suspects detained in connection with the case.
