Former Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, who was previously arrested in a murder case filed at Siddhirganj Police Station related to an anti-discrimination movement, has been shown arrested in two additional cases as per the court's order. Ivy participated in the hearing virtually from Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur.
On Saturday (May 17) at around 11 am, Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahidul Islam Chowdhury issued the order. With this, Ivy has now been shown arrested in three out of the five cases filed against her.
According to Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Kaiyum Khan, the court granted the petition to show Ivy arrested in two cases, including a murder case filed at Siddhirganj Police Station.
Ivy’s lawyer, S.M. Siddiqur Rahman, stated that Ivy had never actively participated in the movement. Despite this, petitions have been submitted to show her arrested in all the cases.
Earlier, during the anti-discrimination movement on July 20 last year, rickshaw puller Tuhin was shot in the head in front of the Dutch-Bangla Bank at Siddhirganj on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. When taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead. Following the incident, Tuhin’s wife, Aleya Akter, filed a case at Siddhirganj Police Station on September 13 last year, naming Selina Hayat Ivy and 99 others, along with 300 unidentified individuals, as accused.
On the same evening, during the anti-discrimination student-public movement at Shimrail on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, hawker Nadim was shot in the left leg. He was taken to the National Orthopedic Hospital, where his leg had to be amputated from the knee. Subsequently, Nadim’s father, Dulal Hossain, filed a case on September 1 last year at Siddhirganj Police Station under charges of attempted murder and explosives.
The court has now ordered that Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy be shown arrested in both of these cases.
