9 Months Later, Murder Case Filed Against Sheikh Hasina and 62 Others

A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 62 others in connection with the shooting death of a young man named Sajal Mia (20) in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, during the anti-discrimination student movement. The case also includes 100–150 unidentified individuals as accused. 

Nine months after the incident, on Friday night (May 16), the victim's mother, Runa Begum (47), filed the case at Siddhirganj Police Station. However, the matter became public on Monday morning (May 19). 

Confirming the case, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Siddhirganj Police Station, Mohammad Shahinur Alam, said, “In this incident, a total of 62 named individuals and 100–150 unidentified persons have been made accused. After a nationwide gazette publication, the victim’s mother filed the case.” 

According to the case statement, on July 20, 2024, during the anti-discrimination movement by students and citizens, the victim, Sajal Mia, joined the protest in front of the Dutch-Bangla Bank on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. That day, the accused allegedly launched a violent crackdown on the protesters using weapons.

During the indiscriminate firing, a bullet struck the victim in the abdomen. He was rushed to Sugandha Hospital in Chittagong Road, where the attending doctor declared him dead.

Among the named accused are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Member of Parliament for Narayanganj-4 A.K.M. Shamim Osman, former MP for Narayanganj-2 Nazrul Islam Babu, former Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, Shamim Osman's son Ayon Osman, and his nephew Azmeri Osman. In total, 62 individuals are named, and 100–150 unidentified individuals are also accused.
