A Narayanganj court has sentenced Lutfor Rahman (33) to life imprisonment with hard labor for killing housewife Najma Akhter Ritu in Siddhirganj. He was also fined Tk 50,000, in default of which he will serve an additional two years of rigorous imprisonment.
District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad delivered the verdict in the convict’s presence on Monday (August 18).
Convict Lutfor Rahman is the son of Jitu Miah of Birpasha village under Bijoynagar upazila in Brahmanbaria. Victim Najma Akhter Ritu was the daughter of Abul Hashem Miah of Pairtala in Brahmanbaria Sadar.
Inspector Kaiyum Khan of court police said Ritu had been living with her so-called husband Lutfor Rahman in Siddhirganj, though he was actually her extramarital partner. On June 22, 2018, Lutfor strangled her to death and fled the scene. Following the murder, Ritu’s brother Abdur Rashid filed a case with Siddhirganj Police Station. After investigation and testimony from witnesses, the court found Lutfor guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment with hard labor.
