Workers of Abdul Monem Limited’s Central Workshop blocked the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj demanding six months’ arrears in wages. The blockade program was carried out on Thursday (21 August) morning at Jangal area of the upazila.
Later, police rushed to the spot and, after discussions with the authorities, assured the workers that the arrears would be cleared within a week. Following the assurance, the workers withdrew the blockade.
Agitated workers said that Abdul Monem Limited’s Central Workshop is located at Jangal area beside the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Bandar upazila, where more than a hundred workers including security guards are employed. For the past six months, the authorities have been making excuses, saying salaries would be paid soon, but have not done so.
“We are leading a miserable life with our families, sometimes starving. Left with no option, we were compelled to block the highway,” said the workers. They also warned that if their arrears are not cleared within a week, they will enforce the blockade again.
Abdur Razzak, the in-charge of Abdul Monem Limited’s Central Workshop, said the arrears would be cleared within the next week.
