
The Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested Jhenaidah district Awami League president and former lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Apu from his residence in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on Sunday night.
He was arrested around 9:30pm in connection with three cases filed against him.
According to Jhenaidah police sources, Apu had been absconding since August 5, 2024. At least three cases have been filed against him, including charges of vandalism and arson at the Jhenaidah district BNP office and an arson attack on the residence of the district BNP president.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun said that Jhenaidah District Awami League president Shafiqul Islam Apu has been arrested. “The DB police picked him up from a house in Dhaka. He is being brought to Jhenaidah. Multiple cases have been filed against him. He will be produced before the court on Monday morning.”
