The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has pushed in 48 more individuals through the Pallathal border of Barlekha upazila in Moulvibazar district.
They were detained early Thursday (July 3). With this, the total number of people detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in push-in incidents in Moulvibazar has risen to 452.
Among them, 341 were detained through Barlekha upazila, 10 through Juri, 21 through Kulaura, 19 through Sreemangal, and 61 through Kamalganj. In addition, hundreds more reportedly crossed the border, but BGB or local authorities could not detain them.
According to sources in the 52 BGB Battalion, the 48 Bangladeshi nationals entered illegally from India and were roaming in the hilly Pallathal Punji area under the jurisdiction of the Pallathal Border Outpost (BOP), when a BGB patrol detained them. Among those detained are 15 men, 15 women, and 18 children.
During initial interrogation, the detainees stated that they had illegally entered India via the border areas of Kurigram and Jessore in search of medical treatment and work. Later, they were pushed back into Bangladesh by the Indian BSF.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Ariful Haque Chowdhury, commander of the 52 BGB Battalion, said the detainees claimed to be residents of the districts of Jessore, Bagerhat, Chapainawabganj, Barguna, Barishal, and Kurigram. Appropriate legal action is being taken against them upon confirmation of their identities.
