Home Adviser admits slight deterioration in law and order

Adviser to Home Affairs Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said that the country's law and order situation deteriorated a little bit over the last several days.

He came up with the statements while speaking after inauguration of an election-related police training programme at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital on Sunday morning.

He said, “The law and order situation was stable until recently, but due to the incidents of the past few days, I would say it has worsened slightly. We will work to restore it fully to its previous state.”

When asked about the sudden unrest in Rajbari he said, “We are investigating the Rajbari incident. Once the inquiry report is complete, we will be able to provide details. The matter is under investigation, but we have already brought five individuals involved under the law. Their interrogation will help us uncover the full picture.”

On whether a fair investigation was possible while the deputy commissioner (DC) and superintendent of police (SP) remained in their posts despite allegations of negligence, the adviser replied, “Negligence will only be established after the investigation. If I remove everyone beforehand, then it means I am not giving importance to the inquiry. After the investigation, those proven guilty will face action, and those found innocent will not. Without an investigation, how can I say who is responsible?”

When asked whether such situations could hinder public participation in the upcoming election, the adviser stated, “When the people turn towards the election, no one will be able to obstruct them. Once they move towards the ballot, no force will be able to prevent them from reaching the polling centres.”

He, however, acknowledged that corruption and drug abuse have yet to be reduced effectively.
