A daring robbery took place on a passenger bus in Fatullah, Narayanganj, where a gang posed as Detective Branch (DB) police officers. At least 15 passengers were held at gunpoint and robbed of gold ornaments, cash, and mobile phones.
The incident occurred early Thursday (September 11) on the Dhaka–Narayanganj link road in Mahmudpur, under Fatullah Police Station. The bus had left Kushtia the previous night, bound for Narayanganj.
Following the robbery, police detained the bus driver Ariful Islam (50), and two helpers, Abu Sayeed (35) and Shawon (15).
Passengers said that on Wednesday night, a GS Paribahan bus (Dhaka Metro-B 15-6895) departed from Kushtia with passengers headed to Narayanganj. Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, the bus reached the Signboard area of Fatullah. Instead of stopping at the usual Signboard junction, the driver pulled over a little further ahead near the District Regional Passport Office in Mahmudpur.
As some passengers were getting off, a group of young men boarded the bus, claiming to be DB police officers. They said they needed to search the bus for drugs while the driver slowly kept the vehicle moving.
According to witnesses, the impostors then held the passengers at gunpoint. They snatched gold bangles, chains, earrings, and cash from passengers Afroza Akter and her sister Munni Akter. At the same time, they looted cash and mobile phones from at least 15 other passengers, including Rubel Hossain.
The robbers got off near Jalkuri, after which the driver continued the journey. Once the gang left, the passengers screamed for help, drawing in locals, who quickly informed police.
Passengers alleged that the behavior of the driver and helpers appeared suspicious, raising doubts of their involvement with the robbers. Police have been informed accordingly.
Shariful Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, said “It is too early to confirm whether this was a robbery or a case of armed hijacking. We are investigating. Based on passenger complaints, we have detained the driver and two helpers for questioning. If evidence of their involvement is found, they will be formally arrested and legal action will follow.”
