National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam announced that the party will not support the ongoing movement led by Jamaat and will instead continue to pursue its own political objectives.
Speaking at the NCP's coordination meeting at the Shahid Abu Sayed International Convention Center in Shahbagh, Dhaka, Nahid emphasized that NCP does not seek Proportional Representation (PR) in the lower house of parliament, but is advocating for it only in the upper house.
"We do not want PR in the lower house. We have taken a firm stance against it. Our only interest lies in advocating for PR in the upper house," Nahid stated.
The NCP leader also addressed the disappointing results in the recent student union elections at Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University, where NCP-supported panels failed to meet expectations. He expressed regret over the outcome, stating, "It is a bit sad that the panel we supported couldn’t achieve the results we hoped for at Dhaka and Jahangirnagar. We are critically reflecting on why we couldn’t achieve our organizational goals over the past year."
Nahid acknowledged that the party had struggled to build sufficient organizational strength, particularly in universities. He pointed to the broader political unrest the country has experienced over the last year, which placed additional pressure on the NCP.
"We’ve faced numerous challenges, and the responsibility for these setbacks has fallen on us. This self-reflection will help us avoid similar mistakes in the future," he added.
Nahid also noted that the NCP-supported student panel had limited time to engage politically, which impacted its performance. The coordination meeting, attended by NCP leaders from across the country, aimed to assess and strengthen the party’s future strategy and political engagement.
