Prof ASM Maksud Kamal appointed as DU VC

Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) of Dhaka University (DU), has been appointed as the 29th Vice-Chancellor (VC) of DU, as the current tenure of VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman expires on November 2nd.

According to a gazatte of the education ministry signed by Joint Secretary Md Mahmudul Alam, President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who is also the chancellor of the university, designated him as the VC of the university temporarily today.

The order will take effect on November 4, when the tenure of existing VC Dr Akhtaruzzaman expires, according to the announcement, adding that "the newly appointed VC will serve as full-time chief executive officer of the university, along with receiving all facilities appropriate to the position."

Dr Kamal, a professor in the Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience, has been the pro-VC (education) at Dhaka University from June 2020.
Dr. Kamal was also appointed as a visiting professor at the prestigious University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom last year, with a five-year term beginning April 1, 2022 and ending March 31, 2027.

Maksud Kamal began his career as a lecturer at Dhaka University's Geology Department in March 2000 and was promoted to professor in the same department in 2010.

He spent nearly six years as a scientific officer at the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARSO) before joining the university.

Maksud Kamal, a recognized expert in earthquake, tsunami, and urban catastrophe management, held four terms as president of the Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) and three terms as general secretary.

He is also the president of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association, where he previously served as secretary general.

ASM Maksud Kamal was also the convener of Blue Panel, an Awami League-backed university teaching organization. He was a member of the University's senate and syndicate. For two terms, he was also the provost of Masterda Surja Sen Hall.
