Army officer taken under military custody over political links: ISPR

An army officer has been taken under military custody over allegations of political involvement, prompting the Bangladesh Army to form a court of inquiry, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement on Friday.

The officer was detained from his residence in Dhaka’s Uttara area on July 17 after a law enforcement agency alerted the army about his alleged political ties.

The army said it treated the matter with utmost importance, and preliminary investigation found substance in the allegation.

A court of inquiry has already been formed to ensure a fair and impartial probe.

Based on the final investigation report, necessary disciplinary action will be taken in line with the country’s military laws and regulations, the statement said.

The army is also coordinating with the police and other law enforcement agencies as part of the investigation process.

Meanwhile, another court of inquiry has been constituted to investigate the officer’s unauthorised absence from his workplace. Action will be taken based on the court’s recommendation under the relevant provisions of the army law, if command responsibility is deemed breached.

The ISPR statement reiterated that the Bangladesh Army is a non-political, disciplined, and professional force.

“There is no scope for political involvement in the military. Any member found involved in such activities will face legal consequences under army regulations,” it said.

The army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professionalism, discipline, and constitutional responsibility across the force.
