Shahbagh blocked demanding July Charter

Protesters under the banner of “July Fighters” have blocked Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, demanding official recognition of the July Charter.

They gathered at the intersection around 11am on Thursday, bringing traffic to a halt.

Around a hundred demonstrators were seen holding red and green national flags, staging a sit-in for the July Charter. Police were also deployed nearby.

According to the July Fighters, families of the wounded and the martyred have been forced to take to the streets since the government has yet to recognize the July Charter. They say repeated calls have gone unheeded with no visible progress.

“The July Charter is not merely a demand; it is our right,” said one protester.

They even warned that the protest would continue until their demands are met, and added that if promises regarding the charter are not fulfilled, they would set up a temporary stage at Shahbagh for a prolonged sit-in.

Traffic remains suspended at Shahbagh due to the blockade. Additional police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed to ensure security.

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said, “Traffic has come to a standstill at Shahbagh intersection and nearby roads. Heavy congestion has built up in the area.”
