
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun has called upon the businessmen and entrepreneurs of this sector to produce fire safety and security products in the country.
The Minister of Industry made this call at a seminar titled 'Investment and Trade Potential in Fire Safety Sector in Bangladesh' at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital on Sunday.
He emphasised modernising firefighting systems, especially at a time when industries are growing proportionally to the country's development.
"It is important to develop the existing fire safety management in factories for more security in industrialisation," he said at the 9th Edition of the "International Fair, Safety and Security Expo (IFSSE 2024)" organised by the Electronics Safety and Security Association of Bangladesh (ESSAB) in the capital's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
Additional Secretary Dr. Khandkar Azizul Islam, Managing Director of Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park GSM Zafrullah, President of ESSAB and Director of FBCCI Md Niaz Ali Chishti, Former President of ESSAB Md Motahar Hossain Khan were present in the function.
Lauding the new fire service depots built in 32 upazilas as a big achievement, Majid said, "Our list of achievements is long but we must continue adding to it. The government is always ready to extend its support for any initiative taken to expedite industrial growth in the country."
The minister also appreciated the expo initiative which he expects will bring positive change with regard to safety concerns.
Speakers at the event urged the government to take necessary measures to modernise fire safety management in the country to save people's lives and assets.
A total of 86,390 fire incidents claimed 219, 154, 184 and 217 lives in 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018 respectively in the country, according to Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence data.
Earlier, the number of fire incidents was 14,682 in 2010 when 63 people died across the country.
Meanwhile, businesses requested the government to provide designated land to manufacture fire safety equipment considering the sector has huge investment potential.
More than 160 globally renowned and leading brands from more than 30 different countries including the USA, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Middle East, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong participated in the expo.
The trade exhibition showcases fire safety-related engraving technologies from around the world in 25 pavilions and 50 booths.
