After investigation, Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shariful Islam stated that the old ID cards had been collected during the distribution of new smart cards in Gazipur Sadar upazila. These old cards were categorized as “waste paper” and sold through a public tender. The paper buyer was a resident of Narayanganj. The NID cards came into his possession mixed with other discarded papers, and since they were of no use to him, he dumped them in the garbage heap.
According to relevant sources, the discarded cards were purchased from the Gazipur Sadar Upazila Election Office by Md. Abdus Salam, the owner of Salam Paper House in Mirpur-2. He bought them mixed in with old papers. Later, one of his workers accidentally included a sack of laminated NID cards along with the paper sacks.
Salam Paper House worker Md. Bijoy Karim said he had bought about Tk 8,000 worth of waste paper to sell in the Jatrabari area. However, no buyers were found for the laminated NID cards inside the sacks. Finally, on the afternoon of August 21, he dumped the cards at the garbage site near Fatullah Stadium Link Road.
According to the police, although no criminal intent was found, the reckless disposal of official documents has raised serious concerns over data security and confidentiality. Locals have called for stricter oversight in the management of sensitive government documents like National ID cards.
